Family Photojournalism Sessions

As a family photojournalist, I reveal the beauty and humor in everyday life and all its chaotic glory for Austin’s sinners, saints, and all you in-betweeners ready to celebrate the messy beauty in your own family’s true stories.

DAY IN THE LIFE

Nobody does mornings exactly like you do. Or evenings, either. Or any moment in between. And even though the days seem long, the character of your days is evolving faster than you can blink.

Together we will create a visual history of your life's current rhythm, quirks and moments. One that will allow you to evoke this period years down the road, when the first-hand memory has faded.

SNAPSHOTS

You know that thing that y'all do, that feels so perfectly iconic for your family? Your beloved weekly trip to the ice cream parlor. The annual Polar Bear Splash. Baking apple pie. Sunday morning coffee at Tom's.

How rad would it be to have a beautiful set of photographs that tell the story of this experience? Snapshot sessions were made for capturing a specific, meaningful happening in your family's story.

MOTHERHOOD

Momming is an all-consuming, unforgettable job, right? But go ahead and scroll through your camera roll. How many are there of you with the little ones, actually doing your superhero thing, mama? As a mother myself, one of my fears is leaving no visual record of my time with my children. Do yourself -- and your children -- a favor. Set aside your excuses and get in the frame with them.

Oh, hello.

I'm Aleks Gajdeczka, an Austin-based family photojournalist specializing in day-in-the-life and moment-driven family documentary photography, capturing the truth, humor, beauty, and chaos in everyday family life. I'm also a longtime Austin resident, a mama to two wild blond ones, and a lover of whiskey, campfire songs, the ocean, and taking off my shoes.

After many years in the field of photography, I finally landed in family photojournalism (where I belong) when working on a personal self=portraiture project called Babies & Bourbon: you can't mom alone -- a semi-humorous but also dead-serious exploration of mothering through the early years with all its absurdity, extreme togetherness, emotional highs and lows, and occasional day-drinking.  It felt wildly liberating and empowering to put the unfiltered, raw story of my own family life out there in the world, and to see that so many others yearned for less pretending and more real, vulnerable truth.

I make photos because I believe that real life is too breathtaking to forget, and the everyday is important to celebrate and record for the future. And also because I'll never tire of the incredibly weird, adorably funny things kids do. I love helping my clients create a visual record of just how it feels to live in this moment in their families, and I take this work (if little else) very seriously.

When I'm not hiding from my children in the bathroom or searching for the sock the dryer swallowed, you'll probably find me out on an adventure with the wild ones (we never forget extra pants), laughing my ass off as they question a stranger about why half of her hat is missing (it's called a visor) or march up to the bartender demanding a beer (they're four and two).

KIND WORDS

"you make photos I will keep for the rest of my life."

"She was so good at not only bringing out all of our personalities, making us feel comfortable and in general feeling like we were all a team in the process, she also has a real talent for capturing (dare I say) the essence of a person, a scene, a moment, in a way I've never witnessed before from a photographer.”

Seeing my life through the lens of art when flipping through the book Aleks created made even the mundane tasks seem special.”

"I cannot imagine undertaking a day-in-the-life series with anyone other than Aleks. Yes, she is by every measure a visionary in her craft but it is her kind, witty, warm and reassuring presence that allowed us to surrender to an experience that was indeed picture perfect.”

"the best gift I've EVER given myself."
